Avanza Food
Avanza Food is the master-franchisee for Carl's Jr. in Spain, Portugal and Andorra as well as the owner in these markets of the Tony Roma's american casual dining brand. An interim management agreement was signed to lead the marketing function and team in order to increase same store sales and traffic through aggressive new product development launches and prmotional campaigns, increase Carl Jr.'s brand awareness through the launch the first-ever national TV campaign and generate greater efficiencies in the managment of the National Advertising Fund.
Restaurante Berlanga
The world-famous cinema director and producer José Luis Berlanga asked [barbell] consulting to make his childhood dream of opening a restaurant come true. Serving the best paellas in Madrid, his first restaurant has become an immediate success, despite having to endure the Covid-19 restrictions. The partnership included the development of the complete business plan, investor pitch, supply chain negotiation and management, strategic vendor negotiations, debt financing structure and negotiation and the development of a management dashboard to assure short-term profitability and ROI.
Burger King
A mid-sized Burger King franchisee in Spain retained [barbell] consulting to lead the management of its business during 2019 and 2020. Daily involvement included the development of the business plans for 2019 and 2020, the definition of MBOs, the cascading of these targets through the organization, the alignment of variable compensation to targets, the analysis of operational, guest satisfaction, traffic, sales and profitability KPIs, the definition of detailed action plans and the follow-up on execution with the existing management team.
Beer & Food
Beer & Food is one of the largest restaurant operators in Spain and retained [barbell] consulting to support its Operations and Marketing teams in the management of their company portfolio. Using [barbell] consulting's analytics tools, a dashboard was developed to objectively monitor performance of restaurants in terms of operational excellence, sales, traffic and profitability. The portfolio was then segmented into clusters and priority units were classified. Using problem-solving methodology, areas of improvement were identified, action plans developed and monitored to assure success and a positive impact on the bottom-line.
Casa Gambrinus
Spain is one of the markets with the highest per capita beer consumption in the world. This insight, coupled with the importance of tourism, has driven the strong expansion of brewery foodservice outlets in the past 10 years. In order to regain its market competitiveness and accelerate its growth, Beer&Food asked [barbell] consulting to develop the full repositioning of the Gambrinus brand, from consumer concept, to menu architecture, new operational standards, improved image and new footprint requirements. The first Gambrinus opening under the new brand positioning is planned for the 1st half of 2019.
Valles del Esla
Cattle raising is the 4th largest industry in Spain with annual sales of more than 22.6 billion Euros. The need to define a winning commercial strategy and the right operational structure to capture significant market share drove Valles del Esla to reach out to [barbell] consulting for support. The design of the long-term business plan required a deep understanding of the cattle raising and consumer markets, the identification of the best and most profitable segments to grow, definition of a unique selling proposition for the Valles del Esla brand and designing the optimal go-to-market strategy to maximize sales. P&L management and long-term investment strategies in cattle stocks were also key requirements for the success of the new strategy.
Viamar
Viamar is a Belgium-based company dedicated to maritime consulting, with a specific focus in newbuilding of vessels. A potential buyer contacted [barbell] consulting in order to perform a management due diligence of Viamar as part of the of the sale process of its operations in The Netherlands and Germany. Key elements of the analysis included the newbuilding market growth expectations for the next 20 years, business growth opportunities for Viamar in the Dutch and German markets, the current and projected financial performance of the company and a recommendation of the fair price of the transaction.
Santagloria
Santagloria is one of the leading brands in the Spanish coffee & bakery segment with almost 100 stores, mostly operated by franchisees. This represented an excellent opportunity for [barbell] consulting to partner with the brand's owners to design its accelerated growth plan. Specific attention was given to the harmonization of the store image, the design of a new traffic-driving marketing strategy, new product development and the improvement of store-level profitability through stricter P&L management and control tools.
L'Obrador
This premium coffee & bakery brand from Barcelona, well-known for its freshly-baked products, also approached [barbell] consulting for help. Given its artisan nature, operational excellence standards and metrics were required to improve customer satisfaction and increase sales. Significant focus was also given to store-level P&L analytics and management in order to improve bottom-line profitability and prepare the brand for future development in the Spanish market.

The #1 pasta & pizza bar brand in Spain is well-known for serving the best "pizza al taglio" in the market. With ingredients imported directly from Italy, prepared and show-cased in the counters of more than 25 outlets, this iconic brand partnered with [barbell] consulting to optimize its business model. A holistic approach was used to improve operational excellence, monitor and improve customer satisfaction, build an innovative pipe-line of new and surprising products, improve store-level profitability, design the restaurant image of the future and adapt its unique store layout to new channels including captive, leisure and shopping mall locations.
Foodbox
Foodbox is a multi-brand, franchised restaurant platform with almost 200 locations in Spain and the United Kingdom. In order to improve its corporate efficiency to support its accelerated growth, [barbell] consulting was contacted to implement and manage the development pipe-line tools for new restaurant openings and to implement zero-based budgeting in order to reduce the cost of travel & entertainment expenses at the corporate level.
